A PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate is a government-issued document that confirms your vehicle meets the required emission norms. It is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
When Should You Renew Your PUC Certificate?
- New vehicle: First certificate is valid for 1 year.
- After that: Needs renewal every 6 months (or as prescribed by local laws).
- Expired PUC? You may face penalties, and your insurance could become invalid.
How to Renew PUC Certificate Online
Step-by-step Guide:
- Visit Official Website
Go to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways portal:
https://puc.parivahan.gov.in - Click on ‘PUC Certificate’
Choose the ‘PUC Certificate’ option from the homepage. - Enter Vehicle Details
- Vehicle Registration Number
- Chassis Number (last 5 digits)
- Captcha code
- Check Validity or Download Existing PUC
If valid, it will show the certificate. If expired, you’ll need to get it renewed offline (PUC testing is done in person).
Note: The PUC certificate can’t be fully renewed online, as emission testing requires a physical test.
How to Renew PUC Certificate Offline
Step-by-step Guide:
- Locate a PUC Center
- Visit any authorized PUC testing center (usually near fuel stations or RTOs).
- You can find centers via the Parivahan site or Google Maps.
- Get Your Vehicle Tested
- The vehicle’s exhaust emissions are tested using sensors.
- It takes only 5–10 minutes.
- Pay the Fee
- ₹60–₹100 depending on the vehicle type and location.
- Receive Certificate
- A printed certificate is issued instantly.
- A digital copy is uploaded to the Parivahan database.
Documents Required for PUC Renewal
- Vehicle Registration Number
- Previous PUC Certificate (optional but helpful)
- No other documents are usually required
