Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) might seem complicated at first, but it’s actually a straightforward process when you follow the right steps. Here’s a beginner-friendly guide to help you through it.
Step 1: Collect Required Documents
Before you start, gather all relevant documents such as:
- PAN Card & Aadhaar Card
- Form 16 (for salaried individuals)
- Form 26AS (tax credit statement)
- Bank account details
- Investment proofs (for deductions under 80C, 80D, etc.)
- Details of other income (rent, interest, capital gains, etc.)
Step 2: Choose the Correct ITR Form
Pick the ITR form applicable to your source(s) of income:
- ITR-1: Salaried individuals with income up to ₹50 lakh
- ITR-2: Individuals with capital gains or foreign income
- ITR-3: Professionals or business owners
- ITR-4: Presumptive income scheme
Make sure you choose the right form, as using the wrong one can lead to rejection.
Step 3: Log in to the Income Tax Portal
- Go to: https://www.incometax.gov.in
- Click on Login and enter your credentials (PAN as user ID).
- If you’re a new user, register first using your PAN.
Step 4: Select ‘File Income Tax Return’
- On the dashboard, click on e-File > Income Tax Returns > File Income Tax Return
- Choose the correct Assessment Year (e.g., 2024–25 for income earned in FY 2023–24)
- Select the mode: Online or Offline
Step 5: Fill in the Details
Carefully enter all required details:
- Personal information (auto-filled if linked with PAN)
- Income details: Salary, house property, other income
- Tax details: TDS from Form 26AS, advance/self-assessment tax paid
- Deductions: Enter eligible deductions under Section 80C, 80D, etc.
- Bank details: Enter for refund (if applicable)
Tip: Most of the salary and tax details get auto-filled if Form 16 and Form 26AS are accurate.
Step 6: Verify Your Tax Calculation
Once all details are entered, the system will calculate your tax liability or refund. Review this carefully.
Step 7: Submit & E-Verify Your ITR
After confirming all details:
- Click Submit
- Complete e-Verification via:
- Aadhaar OTP
- Net banking
- Demat account
- Bank account number
- Send signed ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru (if e-verification isn’t possible)
Note: Your ITR is not processed unless it is verified.
Step 8: Download ITR-V Acknowledgment
Once your ITR is successfully filed and verified, download the ITR-V Acknowledgment for your records.
